In September, 2004, Hurricane Ivan slammed into the island of Grenada with winds over 140mph. Within hours, over 80% of Grenada's housing and infrastructure had been damaged or destroyed.
On April 19, 2005, a team of six representing Mt. Zion UMC traveled to Grenada to work on the home of Mrs. Lyril Bain, a widow who lost a great deal as a result of Hurricane Ivan. We, as a team, really bonded with this family and one another. Truly, this trip was a blessing for all of us.

Our Grenada team is shown in the right photo (LR): Earl Stoyer, Mr. Curlin (our van driver), Rev. Hall, Joshua Skillington, Scott Wyler, Essie Wyler, and Mary Gladstone)

At the right is Mrs. Bain's original house, damaged by Hurricane Ivan, and a new, smaller structure that was built by a neighbor.

This photo shows the secondary house we worked on. Her first house was in major need of repair beyond what we were capable of doing in the time we had. In the two days we worked, we were able to paint one bedroom and the scope of her hallway. We also built a walkway that linked her old home with the new structure, built a wardrobe and shoe closet, put locks on her door, and did trim work.

This is the "Painting Crew" - Rev. Hall, Mary Gladstone (missionary for the Church of the Deaf), and Joshua Skillington (member of Linden Linthicum UMC).

This is the family whose house we worked on (center: Mrs. Lyril Bain - owner of the home) She provided lunch for us everyday.
