Welcoming the New Director of Youth Ministry – Kate Mackereth

Kate is presently a full-time divinity student at Wesley Seminary in Washington, D.C. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology at Messiah College in Grantham, PA where she led Bible studies and was a mediator. She has a wide variety of experience and a strong background in youth ministry. Learn more about Kate in the March Pointer and be sure to welcome her to Mt. Zion.

Mission: Mississippi Night – February 23rd at Chick-fil-A

Please join the Mission: Mississippi 2010 team of 13 youth and 26 adults at the Chick-fil-A on Johns Hopkins Road on Tuesday, February 23, 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm. Team members will be there to raise awareness in our community about the Mt. Zion mission work in Mississippi. A portion of the sales will be donated to support our mission trip to Mississippi in April. Be sure to bring a coupon (available in the Narthex) and join us for dinner at Chick-fil-A.

Walking in the Shadow of the Cross – Meditation Walk

During the Lenten season, many congregations set out “Stations of the Cross” which are comprised of images as well as meditations on Jesus Christ’s arrest, trial, crucifixion, and burial. You are encouraged to take part in the “Walking in the Shadow of the Cross” meditation walk, created by Julie Hancock, that is installed in the Sanctuary during the Lenten Season. We will be using the Scriptural Way of the Cross with some additions so that we can cover the last week of Jesus’ ministry in Jerusalem.

Mt. Zion Is Bringing Back BINGO Night!

Fun, games and prizes for all on Saturday, February 27th at 5:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall. Come for dinner and stay for the games! Hot dogs, chips, lemonade and brownies will be on sale. Entry fee: 2 cans of food for the Thrift Shop or a cash donation. Sponsored by Fellowship Committee.

Stephen Ministry: A New Way to "Touch Lives for Jesus Christ"

We are excited to announce that we are currently taking the first steps in creating a Stephen Ministry Program at Mt. Zion. Stephen Ministry trains laypeople to do Christian care giving. Those who train to become Stephen Ministers participate in a 50-hour training program, learning skills and developing talents to bring Christ's healing love to people who are grieving, depressed, or coping with other life challenges. Over the next few weeks, we will be recruiting and selecting Stephen Minister candidates to participate in our first training program, which will begin this Spring. Blood Drive Saturday, March 20th, 9am - 2pm

Come and support the American Red Cross and Health Care Ministry team at Mt. Zion by donating a pint of blood. This is a wonderful way to support your community by giving a little of yourself. You can donate as often as every 56 days. (Other restrictions may apply). You will NOT be able to donate blood if you have donated January 23, 2010 or later. Sign up with a volunteer at the church, use the American Red Cross website to pick a time or 1-800-GIVEBLOOD and choose Mt. Zion as your donation site. Remember to bring a valid I.D. with you. Thespians Needed for Murder Mystery Night!

The Fellowship Committee is sponsoring a Murder Mystery night in June and is looking for actors/actresses to play roles in it. There are no lines to memorize and only one or two "rehearsals" required. Christianity 101: Getting Acquainted with Jesus

This past fall, Mt. Zion began a series of classes allowing anyone to familiarize themselves with Christian beliefs and history. Each course is eight weeks in length. The next class in this series is “Getting Acquainted with Jesus,” a survey of Jesus’ life and teachings that offers opportunities to explore questions about Jesus’ ministry and message and to determine one’s response to Jesus’ question, “Who do you say that I am?” Topics include: “Beginnings,” “Galilean Ministry,” “Passion and Resurrection,” “Sermon on the Mount,” “Parables,” “Early Beliefs about Jesus,” and “What Do You Believe About Jesus.” This class, taught by Pastor Malcolm, begins this Wednesday, January 14 in the Chapel. There are two times available at 9:30 am 7:30 pm.

Orientation Classes for New Members

The classes will be facilitated by David Norton, Mount Zion’s Lay Leader, Bob Fischer, Mount Zion’s Council Chairperson, and Pastor Malcolm Stranathan. Three class sessions will be spread over three consecutive Sundays. Sessions One and Two will be offered on the last two Sundays of the month during the Sunday School hour; while Session three will be a Coffee and Dessert time with Pastor Malcolm following the Fellowship Luncheon which is offered on the first Sunday of each month.

Session One will be facilitated by Bob Fischer who will share Mount Zion’s organizational structure, encourage class members to join in the Discipleship Adventure, and introduce leaders of the church to share their ministry areas. Session Two will be facilitated by David Norton who will share who we are and where we are going, including a time to share our new mission, vision and core values. Session Three will be facilitated by Pastor Malcolm who will share more about the United Methodist Church and invite them to become part of a movement here at Mount Zion in which God is calling them to make a kingdom difference.

Our first class will be offered on Sunday, January 18th at 9:40 am in the Fellowship Hall. Session Two will be offered on Sunday, January 25th at 9:40 am and Session Three will be on Sunday, February 1st at 1:00 pm. Death Penalty Repeal Press Conference

Clergy and others are encouraged to attend a press conference Tuesday, January 13th, at 2:00 pm, to urge the governor and Maryland’s General Assembly to accept the recommendation of the Maryland Commission on Capital Punishment to repeal the death penalty. The conference will be held at First and St. Stephen's United Church of Christ, York Road a half-mile south of Towson University. Leaders are asked to come by 1:30 pm to sign a petition. Please join us for the “Singing a New Spirit Concert” at 7:00 pm on Sunday, January 18th at Foundry UMC and the “One Heart, One People Worship” on Monday January 19th at Mt. Vernon Place UMC at 7:00 pm.

Deadline to Register for Discipleship Academy Extended

Church leaders have until Sunday, January 25 to register for courses at the Discipleship Academy. The registration fee of $35 remains the same. Register online at www.bwcumc.org/academy. The Discipleship Academy will kick off with a one-day Leadership Day for Church Officers and Leaders Saturday, February 7th, 9:00 am – 3:30 pm, (see above website for locations). The classes offered include SPRC, Church Council, Finance/Treasurer, Trustee, Hospitality, and Gateway training. The Leadership Day will be followed by evening classes meeting for six weeks, starting Monday, February 9th, to help build an Acts 2 church, including Evangelism, Stewardship, Spiritual Leadership and the Certified Lay Minister Module II. . . . and cassette tapes are available to borrow from the Church Library. If you would like to have a tape or CD to take to a shut-in, we will gladly prepare one. If you wish one for yourself, a donation of $2.00 is requested to support this ministry. You may order tapes or CD's in the West Narthex/Entrance area; picking up the requested tape/CD the following Sunday.
